Ruth Harvey

Ruth Harvey is a teacher, horticulturist, permaculturist, artist and writer, who helped establish a school in a refugee camp in Greece in 2016. Enduring friendships with refugees from Afghanistan gave her greater insight into the history and plight of Afghans in their own country and their subsequent migration journeys.

Ruth worked with Permaculture for Refugees (P4R), teaching skills and knowledge for food security in refugee settlements in Greece, Italy and Bangladesh, which reinforced the vital importance of learning in empowering individuals and building resilient communities.

The return of Afghanistan to the dark ages with the oppression and denial of education to women, reflects the escalation of violence worldwide – and calls for a radical shift in the balance of power away from men and the war machine, toward the education and development of women and girls, and the values of care and nurture of the earth and each other.”
